Trees down, homes damaged after EF-0 tornado hits Johnston neighborhood

IT STARTS NOW. IOWA IS MOST SCATTERED BY SEVERE STORMS. THE STORM FORECAST CENTER SAYS DERECHO TOOK OVER OUR STATE THIS MORNING. IT COMES JUST DAYS AFTER FIVE PEOPLE DIE IN A DEADLY TORNADO EXPLOSION THIS MORNING. THE SYSTEM CUT CENTURY AND REGULAR ENERGY TREES. DEBRIS THAT DAMAGE PEOPLE’S HOMES AND COVER CITY STREETS. IN JOHNSTON, A TORNADO HITS THE GREEN MEADOWS NEIGHBORHOOD. KCCIS PEPPER PURPLE VISITED NEIGHBORS WHILE DIGGING THROUGH THE WRECK today. THIS IS THE FIRST ONE THAT SCARED ME. I WAS AT THE WINDOW AND IVE STANDED THERE AND I SAW MANY FURHINAS THAT YOU HAVE, BUT NOT LIKE THIS. THAT WAS THAT WAS SOMETHING ELSE. A TORNADO THROUGH THE HEART OF A JOHNSTON NEIGHBORHOOD. ALL THE TREES BLOWN DOWN AND YOU JUST LOOK AT THE STATE OF A ROOT SYSTEM. AND THEN THERE ARE SIDEWALK THAT THEY WERE FOR. RATED AN F0, THE STORM LEAVED MOST HOMES UNATTACHED, BUT DOZENS OF TREES WERE DOWN AS THEIR BRANCHES WERE SNAPED, WITH MUCH OF WHAT WAS BELOW. THIS LAND WAS TOKEN FROM THE EARTH. THE SUNROOM OF THIS HOUSE WAS BURNED AND PART OF THE UPPER FLOORS WAS PUSHED TO ONE SIDE. ALL THIS DAMAGE WAS THE RESULT OF ONE OF THE MANY TREES THAT FELL IN JOHNSTON FRIDAY. THE CLEANUP IS IN ACTION. THIS MORNING I LOOKED AT THE JOHNSTON FACEBOOK PAGE AND ALL THE PICTURES WERE OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD LOOKING AT THE WORK AHEAD, THEY ARE ALL VERY TOAST AND LOOKING AT THE TREES STILL UP ABOVE. The Green Meadows community in Johnston is cleaning up debris from an EF-0 tornado. The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado in Johnston early Friday morning. The EF-0 tornado traveled northeast about 3.2 miles, starting in the Terra Park area just north of Interstate 80/35 and crossing the Des Moines River. It had estimated maximum wind speeds of 85 mph and a maximum width of 150 feet. In the neighborhood, large trees were uprooted, falling on homes and damaging sidewalks in the community. The EF-0 tornado traveled northeast about 3.2 miles, starting in the Terra Park area north of Interstate 80/35 and crossing the Des Moines River. It had estimated maximum wind speeds of 85 mph and a maximum width of 150 yards.

In the neighborhood, large trees were uprooted, falling on homes and damaging community sidewalks. A neighbor with many downed trees said that despite the low rating the tornado received, he felt the power of the storm as he watched the downed trees from his front window.

“This is the first (storm) that scared me,” Mike Bishop said. “I’ve stood there and seen a lot of storms go by, but not like this, this was something else.”
